I suspect I'm getting older Older and older still The body aches in novel ways And I'm not even over the hill I don't think I'm over the hill? Life is full of options But you don't always get your way Do the math, choose your path But you can't pick how you decay No you don't pick how you decay I know this world isn't fair But we're all aging every day Some try to hide from the hands of time But it's gunna grab you either way Might as well enjoy your stay I've been thinking about the future Not about fantasy Less flying cars, less trips to Mars And more about RRSP's Versus Tax Free Savings I know I'm getting older Older than I was before Aim for grace, embrace the gray Enjoy what life has in store And live a life worth living for Live a life worth living for Live a life worth living for

Too dumb to quit Too restless to not Fumble on the fallacy Of sunken costs Too tired to write Too restless to not Hum a new tune Let it get caught I'm a workhorse put out to pasture Grazing on my greens, move a little faster Just a tortoise chasing the hare Take it slow and steady, get there when we get there See what was built Survey the land A world of song Carved of your hand Know what you do And understand why If it feels true Do it with pride I'm a workhorse put out to pasture Grazing on my greens, chew a little faster Just a tortoise chasing the hare Take it slow and steady, get there when we get there
3.
Sittin' here in my backyard Sittin' here with my guitar It's been a while Since I've had the time 'Cause it goes away It goes away Days like today Days like today Sittin' here in my backyard Countin' the clouds Cool in the shade And I can see What I need to see Before it goes away It goes away Days like today Days like today They go away They go away Days like today Days like today Sittin' here where I'm sitting Sitting here where I've sat before I take a breath And let my body rest As it goes away It goes away Days like today Days like today Days like today Days like today
4.
Am I the star of my own story From my own point of view How I long to be the hero But some days I'm the villain too I don't always feel so brave Staring danger in the face Behind every movement made The risks are there to take Anyone can be a hero Nominate the nobodies Find the quiet in the riot Pick up rubble in the streets Rebuild the world with our dignity There's ashes in our hair There's oceans at our feet There's work left to be done Work that'll never be complete Anyone can be a hero Nominate the nobodies Find the quiet in the riot Pick up rubble in the streets Rebuild the world with our dignity Rebuild the world with our dignity Rebuild the world

When we become birds We need not always fly Rest our wings in a pond A pocket of the sky Here With You I'm Falling Here With You I'm Falling We will not build our nest High in branches of the trees If we hatch our eggs We can run them to the reeds The world's moving faster But we're standing still No moment lasts forever No matter might or will Here with you I'm falling Here With You I'm Falling

Dancing by the light of the refinery Let the burnoff eat the flame Betting our future in a fantasy Our lives for someone's gain Empty roads Nowhere left to go We keep on driving Aimless wandering Look outside Where mountains used to stand Where empty pits remain Empty’s in demand Take and take and don’t you dare ask why Dancing by the light of the refinery Let the burnoff eat the flame Money in the place of missing memories Our lives for someone's gain Built a home But didn’t want to pay We set it up on sand Watched it wash away The world burns Brighter every day It’s slipping through out hands What else could we say? Left with nothing after all we’ve had Dancing by the light of the refinery Let the burnoff eat the flame Betting our future in a fantasy Our lives for someone's gain

Origami 03:54
I brought you into this world My joy, my only friend Generations lost before you Lest the bloodline end To tell you all my stories To teach you all my words Laugh with you much longer Than any joke is worth But you can't talk to me anymore You can't talk to me anymore I was folding proteins Like origami in my hands Creasing the paper Into things I understand Your life will not be perfect But you're perfect by design Every struggle in my life Lost in the light of your eyes But you can't talk to me anymore You can't talk to me anymore Please don't be ashamed To see me as I am Know that I am gone Know who I am Past my final days Beyond my final breath Remember me but once a year On the Day of the Dead Don't think of irritations Let disappointment leave your mind Just know I loved you As I'm sure you did in kind You can't talk to me You can't talk to me anymore

The pan is clean and the stove is cold Stewed chilis with sourdough Looks like I'm having dinner on my own But I keep cooking for two I tell myself that you're okay That maybe you're just running late Keep forgetting that you've gone away And I keep cooking for two I keep waiting for you I've got baked beets and a can of spam Cottage cheese and red onion jam And yet I'm eating all alone again Oh, I keep cooking for two So there's leftovers waiting for you
9.
Logging on to the party Everyone is there It's so good to see your face Wish we could share the same air We used to have fun We used to have fun But something's changed We used to have fun We used to have fun Things don't feel the same Spill a drink and soak it up But our jokes stay dry Punchlines linger in the room Can't seem to land them this time Are we getting older? Or did the whole world age? Are we getting colder? Living in this cage? We used to have fun We used to have fun So tell me how you're really doing Are you holding up okay? When the world we know makes a turn What words can we say? We used to have fun We used to have fun But something's changed We used to have fun We used to have fun Things don't feel the same Logging off of the party No one else is near It was good to see your face My god, what a year

Tomorrow I'm gunna get up at dawn With the birds catching worms in my lawn I gotta get up, so why delay Tomorrow's gunna be different from today Tomorrow I'm gunna chase the sun Turn like a flower til the day is done Collect myself like a bouquet Tomorrow's gunna be different from today I say these words & roll my eyes I doubt myself half the time Don't let these thoughts get in my way When every day, feels the same pick up on the smallest change The subtleties of the wonderfully mundane 'Cause tomorrow's gunna be different from today Tomorrow might be worse than I thought Might not get to do the things I ought Hope I'm wrong, but either way Tomorrow's gunna be different from today Tomorrow's gunna be different from today

about

When a friend asked Doug Hoyer what his 6th album, Getting Older, sounded like, he enthusiastically replied:

“You know my other 5 albums? It's a lot like those!”

While the restless Canadian indie-pop songwriter has varied his sonic palette over the past decade, here he is consistently rooted in his wry, playful yet sincere, reflective songwriting. Getting Older showcases a focus on lyrical precision, needling the thread on topics such as aging, perspective, family, resource extraction, and the perennial theme of change.
